D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die, or just D4, is a crazy time travelling detective adventure title that has you interacting with insane characters in absurd situations. In short: this game is quite unlike anything else I’ve played in a long time.
The closest comparison I could make to how this game plays would maybe be one of the Telltale Games like The Walking Dead or The Wolf Among Us. You don’t control the characters so much as direct them with an on-screen cursor. The game also fully supports Kinect so you could play the game from start to finish without actually picking up the controller if that’s your thing.
I’m really not sure how to explain this game without ruining both its charm and its crazy story. What I will say is that the game is structured in an episodic format and initially comes with a prologue and two episodes. Each is presented like a TV show including a TV show style intro segment.
This game is very polarizing. You will either enjoy your time with it or absolutely hate it. Either way I can guarantee that you won’t understand what is happening or why the game rewards you for random things (hitting friend, hitting airplane oxygen mask, hitting street sign???). What I can say is that if you’re looking for a completely different experience this may be the game for you.
